Our Premier Album of 2025: Rosalía's Lux Claims the Top Position.

At first glance, this work could seem more like a challenging academic examination rather than a new pop album from an artist whose previous hit was a collaboration with a global pop star. Divided into four distinct parts and performed in 13 tongues, it is a dizzying classical-tinged album that delves into female mystique, religious ascent, and corporal change, often through the lens of different female saints. The dissolution of a love affair—a theme handled with raw openness on another major 2025 album—is shot heavenward here, supported by the lush presence of a full symphony orchestra and input from an award-winning composer among an extensive list of contributors. The pure ambition alone makes the efforts of other pop stars seem quite small.

Transcending Scholarly Pretense

That this album succeeds in escape dry academic posturing feels nearly a miracle, and full praise belonging to Rosalía. Although this is not the first time album to fuse historical sounds and the present, its ambitions are far greater on Lux, with the balancing act more precarious. The element that really elevates her fourth release, outside of its multilayered melodies, rich compositions, and engrained theatricality, proves to be an essential spirit of playfulness. Similar to the legendary artist at her height, you find a wondrous sense to the vocalist's singing that pulls you into its whirlwind. When she is breaking your heart in two, the listener nevertheless want to stay right there through the ride.

A Signature Moment of Exuberance

That playful spirit shines brightly during the stunning piano-led song inspired by Saint Clare. It bathes in a sorrowful melancholy over several minutes. Suddenly, everything falls silent, and there's a spontaneous laugh followed by a declaration prior to a comically exaggerated orchestral crescendo crashes down like cartoonish impact. The track then shifts to the wild single driven by galloping orchestration, a powerful choir, and a cameo appearance from the artist Björk.

"The magic with Lux is that you rarely quite understand—nor want to predict—what you will go next."

Almost each song ends in a totally distinct point from where it began. A track examines the fleeting trappings of celebrity with a featherlight symphony before disintegrating in electronic cacophony. Another, a song that recalls the artist's earlier trap-infused style starts off dark and brooding, with menacing vocals, before fluttering flamenco rhythms and a heavenly chorus enter to soften the song's rough edges.

The Bridge Between Experiment & Pop

Another crucial achievement on the album is straddling the line of bold experimentation and broad appeal. This is no surprise that the album has become the artist's first work to crack the Top 5 of major markets: its heart contains a suite of truly catchy hits. A song sung entirely in English builds around a refrain that seems to collect increasingly infectious melodies as it spirals skyward. This feat is echoed by a different expansive track that grows and constricts, weaving multiple tunes like an intricate tapestry.

  • A waltz-like number seduces via its playful, theatrical flair and an anthemic chorus.
  • Lyrically, it shares with pop culture honesty of other heartbreak anthems, eviscerating an ex- partner labeled an "emotional bully".
  • Throughout the album, the vocals carry a painted-on smile, akin to a storybook character hiding a blade: "Top prize in acting like a scoundrel / You have won the trophy of letdown."

A Maximalist Feast for the Soul

Lux is pop on a grand scale, an ambitious grasp for high Art in an era of looming artificial blankness. It rejects self-absorption for glorious elevation, creating a dramatic drama that skillfully manages its own inherent excess. This is an abundant well of hidden gems that takes patience to fully mine but doesn't feels like hard work. Where some major pop albums of 2025 felt like a meager meal, this record is a lavish banquet at which the guests around it, perhaps tipsy on holy wine, flit from conversations about ancient figures, the galvanizing sensation of soul-shattering grief, and common stories about hopeless partners. In essence, it's a modern-day musical from pop's most endlessly creative visionary.
