Crew Member Reveals Depression Following ‘Tsunami of Online Abuse Following Journey
A pioneering space traveler has spoken candidly about her struggle with mental health after being subjected to a relentless barrage of criticism in the aftermath of a historic all-female space mission.
Amanda Nguyen – known as a researcher and activist – was part of the 11-minute suborbital flight earlier this year, which also carried well-known figures.
The high-profile flight was heavily criticized by some, who challenged its value and environmental footprint.
Reflecting on the ordeal, the astronaut, who became the first Vietnamese woman in space, stated the negative reaction buried her dreams under an torrent of sexist abuse.
“I explained the depression could persist for a long time,” the astronaut shared in a online statement, recalling a phone call from a fellow crew member in the aftermath of the flight.
She portrayed the press attention and digital reaction as an barrage beyond typical human coping.
“For a full week, I was bedridden and couldn't leave my Texas location,” she revealed. “Even a month on, a phone call ended with me hanging up, weeping uncontrollably.”
Overshadowed by Sexism
The researcher, who has dedicated her work to women's health research and operated research during the flight, said every professional achievement – from her lab work and astronaut training to the historic significance of her background – was drowned out under the avalanche of gendered attacks.
She is most acclaimed for her pioneering work protecting the rights of sexual assault survivors.
Her own aspiration for spaceflight was paused after being assaulted during her time as a student, leading to a years-long quest for justice.
Finding Solid Ground
Now, eight months after fulfilling her dream, she reports that the heaviest sorrow is beginning to clear, and she acknowledged the supporters whose support pulled her through. “You all saved me,” she said.
She concluded that even with the backlash, important benefits had emerged from the experience, such as elevated attention for her women's health research and new advocacy opportunities.
Flight Details
The fully automated New Shepard rocket lifted off from Texas in April, carrying the historic roster on a short trip that crossed the Kármán line of outer space.
The diverse crew also comprised leaders in multiple disciplines.
